For the month of November, we’ve been cultivating our attention on the music in Nia classes.
Nia historically has it’s own very clear vibes. If you’ve been a student, you know that Nia feel. The music tends to stand out immediately to new people. Nia routines for me, are layered with music that brings texture to my emotions, lets my spirit take flight, and anchors me to Soul presence. I find it quite magical!
There is a communication with the body, a relationship, that opens up new information to how I can move, how I’m inspired to move, maybe even show me how I don’t want to move. Sometimes emotions can get triggered & effortlessly release through my body. The latest routine we’ve been playing with has had a jazz, funk, groove theme. Within this body of work, some of the songs have had been an intensity, chaotic, experience of instruments that have brought up a Yang agitation to stimulate the nervous system to find a new level of regulation, as the chaos is immediatly followed by the music shifting into an expression that lets the body land in deeper peace, freedom, the softness of Yin.
As we all know, music is powerful. Tones, rhythm, melody; both harmonious & discordant music can serve as potent catylists for holistic … whole being… transformation, when introduced complimentary intentionality.
Developing a deeper sensitivity to musical impact on our nervous system, how the brain, emotions, & body receives it, is one of my favortie practices in Nia. I appreciate I don’t have to know all the scientifc data to know the power of Music as Medicine, as it as coupled with Movement as Medicine. They go hand in hand to bring so many expressions, such as depth, fullness, joy, dreaminess, play, sass, grounding, ethereal, &/or self-healing to each Nia experience.
My body, emotions, spirit, Know magic is a’foot when I tune in to the sensations transmitted through music, the inspired the movements of free dance or the choreography.
Nia utilizes artsitry in all that is weaves into this vast body of work. The first level, the White Belt, is the Art of Sensation. How does sensation help us as students, cultivate the art movement in our unique Body’s Way?
I often feel music as this bridge. The deeper I can listen … not only through my ears, but through my body, the sensations can inspire how my body desires to move ~ or not. And then we follow that inner, personal guidance to have our chosen Nia experience.
This brings continually more Joy & Pleasure into my dance … it calls me back again & again, to feeling amazing, connected, & open to experience all expressions of living fully in this amazing Sacred Vehicle, of the Body!
All who come to dance & move with Nia, have the opportunity to explore your own personal journey & experience of this relationship. This then can translate into how we dance through our daily life.
