The 5 Principles of The Body’s Way

The Body’s Way of Nia is based on our anatomical form & funtion… design & structure, the way our body is meant to move, based on the design of our bones, joints, muscles, & connective tissue. Through The Body’s Way we learn how to get the most optimal powere, propulsion, fitness, and flexibility from your body, without pain.

2. The Body Demands Balance. The body is designed in almost perfect symmetry & balance. The body has paired organs and is balanced in left & right, front & back, upper & lower. Movements should balance equally through the physical structure. This promotes balance in musculature, skeletal system, brain & nervous system. Part of the balancing is cirular motions, taking curved path movements engages both small & large muscle tissue fibers.

3. The Body is Balance in Yin/Yang. The body needs equal attention to both energetic & elemental expressions of life force. The body receives through Yin, the feminine, the beingness, the elements of water & earth. This energy flow is softer & subtle; it’s directed inward to our inner soulful self & inner world. It hears the sounds of melody and is inspired to move circularly & softly. It is the inhale of the breath, the recptivity of Life.

Yang is thr fire in the belly, the air of activity, the masculine. This energetic expression is outwardly directed, it takes action. It’s sensations have hard, focused, directional, disciplined qualities. The sounds & feelings of rhythm, intensity or explosive. Yang is the exhale breath, moving out into the world.

4. The Body’s Way Demands Simultaneous Mobility & Stability. When we have the proper balance of mobility & stability, we have the power to move our bodies vertically, horizontally, and in circles. Through the 13 Joint design of the body, we see that motion, movement, & mobility is what the body does. Simultaneously, the adjoining muscles & connective tissues dictate the body’s design for stability. These two functions are intrinsically intertwinned. Too much or too little of either of these functions inhibit sytemic wellness.

5. The Body Itself Reveals The Body’s Way. The body speaks through the language of sensation. The voices communicate via ‘Yes, this feels good. More please.‘ or ‘Ouch. This creates pain. Please stop, examine if this is harmful of constructive pain, and make adjustments as needed.’ These messages guide us to feel an inner alignment of balance, strength, harmony, that says: “This is how I’m built, so live in me accordingly.”

You are invited to continue to explore these principles for yourself! When yo step into the practice of Nia you begin to discover the unique expression of YOUR Body’s Way & live a continuing journey or vitality!
